~ SPIRIT ~

And God asked the feline Spirit
Are you ready to come home?
Oh, yes, quite so, replied the precious soul
And, as a cat, you know I am most able
To decide anything for myself.

Are you coming then? asked God.
Soon, replied the whiskered angel
But I must come slowly
For my human friends are troubled
For you see, they need me, quite certainly.

But don’t they understand? asked God
That you’ll never leave them?
That your souls are intertwined. For all eternity?
That nothing is created or destroyed?
It just is….forever and ever and ever.

Eventually they will understand,
Replied the glorious cat
For I will whisper into their hearts
That I am always with them
I just am….forever and ever and ever.

Renette, born blind and has no sight whatsoever, commissioned sketch artist Greg Lourens to do a drawing of a Maine Coon cat – SPIRIT – that she had a very special connection with. She insisted it was to be done in colour even though she doesn’t know colour. She was convinced that Greg could capture not only the likeness but the very essence of the connection between Renette and Spirit. Greg has used pencil crayon and has created the depth with hours and hours of detail layering for the drawing. In total it has taken 5 months to do. The drawing is 90cms wide.

Today, a year almost to the day since SPIRIT was diagnosed with cancer, Renette came to collect the work. In the attached photos you can see how Greg helped her ‘feel’ firstly the outer edges and then she explored the actual features of the cat. After that she stood silently before the image in deep communion with it and found this to be very emotional.

For Greg – this commission was deeply meaningful with the challenge to capture that essence of this majestic animal which will stay with him forever.
